Flagstaff, Arizona:--The Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project (GCWRP) will host the Wild and Scenic Film Festival On Tour at the Orpheum Theater on Saturday, April 11th at 7:00 pm.
SYRCL's (South Yuba River Citizens League) 13th Annual Wild & Scenic® Film Festival returns to Flagstaff with another incredible selection of films to change your world. Considered one of the nation's premiere environmental and adventure film festivals, this year's films combine stellar filmmaking, beautiful cinematography and first-rate storytelling to inform, inspire and ignite solutions and possibilities to restore the earth and human communities while creating a positive future for the next generation. Festival-goers can expect to see Award winning films about nature, community activism, conservation, water, climate change, and wildlife.
This is the sixth year that the Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project (GCWRP) will host the film festival to bring together northern Arizonans for an inspirational evening focusing on a variety of important environmental issues close to home. An opening reception with local conservation groups, drinks, and music will connect festival attendees with local environmental issues and ways to become involved.
The theme for the 2015 festival is "A Wild Life". Along with our usual line-up of beautiful, engaging and eye-opening films, we will have a particular focus this year on wildlife. Featured at the tour venue in Flagstaff will be six conservation films in three hours. Pride is a 15 minute film that explores the cultural relationship between residents of Gujarat, India and the last remaining population of Asiatic Lions in the world. With fewer than 50 lions in the wild at the turn of the 20th century, rural communities started working with the government to create a haven for this top predator and are successfully securing its place in the ecosystem. In the 8 minute film, Our Power: Black Mesa, AZ, meet members of the Climate Justice Alliance as they strive to generate "energy without injustice, power without pollution" by using solar power instead of fossil fuels. The final, feature film of the evening is OR7- The Journey, an inspiring 67 minute long film about a wild Northern gray wolf named Journey. This lone wolf's incredible journey from Oregon to California—the first to enter California in ninety years—and the story of the Wolf as a species in the United States is told in this film. Brought to the brink of extinction, wolves have begun a fragile recovery. Hear what wolf experts and biologists have to say about this amazing creature; take the journey. GCWRP works to build an educated and supportive community to welcome the return of wolves to their historic home range. "The film festival is a natural extension of the Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project's work to encourage citizens to act on behalf of wolf recovery and the restoration of ecological health to the Grand Canyon region," says program director Emily Renn.
A raffle and silent auction will benefit the work of the Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project. One free raffle ticket will be included in the price of the $12 admission ticket (or $10 for students), and door prizes will be given away by several of the film festival sponsors.
